My Neighbor Down the Hill Burns 

cuttings dead branches leaves and
twigs     turns while his charcoal

colored dog barks and runs back     forth
across his backyard     my neighbor's

     dog     a funny looking
mutt with short legs and bushy

fur around his jowls and throat
     what's he barking at     it seems

to be another dog running
in the woods     back     forth

but this one disappears then
reappears     making itself

small then large     shifting colors
and shape as though by craft     yet

in the open     once     shows up
     coyote     scruffy tail     pointy

muzzle and taut thorax
then it's gone     a puff of smoke
