Sheep Herd 

Sheep herd held by holdings

     that span generations:

though men might off to war, 

     or to city to sell their hour, 

these lambs still flow and feed 

on grass one sows as hasty 

as thoughts on ancestors passed, 

as folks who want mutton at last. 

     All flesh is grass returned 

and returned again: ewe to lamb 

then mother to son: fed and fed 

on life as fodder: gone fallow.
