Io
Io
Phoenicians deny they
shackled Io or stole her
for Egypt: Io herself,
they say, makes love
with a captain as his
vessel lies at Argos.
Then seeing herself
swollen with his child,
she leaves her shores,
freely sails with him
to avoid the revelation,
the shame, the chiding
of her papa, the king.
